Tribal Sands

Tribal Sands gathers belly dancers from the Southwest, converging to celebrate the world of Belly Dance. This year we have workshops and performances from our favorite returning performers: Anita from Fat Chance and Amy Sigil from Unmata, as well as new guests Shasha, from Salt Lake, and Molly from Grand Junction. Our festival starts with an evening of Dancing in the Desert on Friday May 7, 2010. The following evening we have a great show in the world-famous Star Hall, where troupes from throughout the Southwest perform before a packed crowd. The festival ends with an overnight river trip on the Colorado river, where we crown a new Queens of D'Nile at a farewell bash. In between all this fun and entertainment are workshops all day Saturday & Sunday. Learn the secrets of ATL, learn using zills, learn using veils, learn stage presence, and learn from Amy Sigil what makes UNMATA appear magic on stage. On Monday and Tuesday is our famous Colorado River trip. This year the trip will be an overnight trip, which promises fun, relaxation, and beachside dancing.

While most classes assume that the student has some belly dance experience, all levels are welcome and encouraged. Ojai Bellydance Festival is pleased to present Amy Sigil, internationally acclaimed master teacher and director of UNMATA, for a mini-intensive on Improvisational Tribal Style dance (ITS). Building on the work of dance pioneers Carolene Nericcio & FCBD, ITS fuses elements of Hip-hop, Jazz, Street dance, and Tribal Fusion Bellydance. Improv is the heart of both bellydance and street dance. These workshops offer a repertoire of movement, combinations, and cues to develop improv skills and add spice to choreography.

The Breakthrough Fusion Competition is the premiere competition of its kind in the bellydance community. This is a FUSION-ONLY competition - That’s right... No traditional Middle Eastern categories. No traditional music. No ATS! This is about innovation and the future of the art. UNMATA will be performing at the Gala show starting at 8:00 pm. The panel of respected judges, including Miss Amy Sigil, give critique “American Idol” style... on stage, on mic, immediately after the performer finishes. No waiting to receive your score cards in the mail, no confusion in the audience about what the judges might be thinking. This year adding a day of Workshops + a slumber party on Saturday, January 2nd, in addition to the Competition & Show on Sunday, January 3rd.
